At the on-going 60th session of the United Nations Subsidiary Bodies (SB58) in Bonn, Germany, the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change (AGN) met with in-coming COP29 Presidency team and outlined Africa’s priorities.
Speaking when COP29 President-Designate, Mukhtar Babayev graced the AGN morning coordination plenary, Saturday, 8th June, 2024, AGN Chair, Ali Mohamed said the group is looking forward to successful outcomes on climate finance, the new Quantified Goal on finance that is being negotiated as it is central to all climate thematic targets and actions.
“As we prepare for COP29, our focus is climate finance based on agreed obligations within the multilateral climate process and the need to improve investments to unlock the continent’s potential to tackle the climate crisis, which is paralysing most economies,” said Ambassador Mohamed.
And COP29 President Designate highlighted the importance of ensuring fair outcomes at COP29, especially on climate finance, in view of Africa’s unique circumstances and vulnerabilities despite contributing minimally to global emissions.
“Africa suffers many climate impacts and yet struggles with finance to tackle them,” said Ambassador Babayev. “It will be a historic moment if the NCQG is agreed upon and adopted at COP29; we are working tirelessly to ensure we deliver a fair deal in the context of the most affected countries and regions.”
COP29 will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11-22nd November 2024.
