For the first time in decades, development progress has stalled. The war in Ukraine, the worsening climate emergency and the current economic downturn have derailed progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the blueprint for a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable future.

Using the latest available data and estimates, The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition presents a sobering picture of the SDGs – the roadmap out of crises –  sounding the alarm on the considerable gaps and challenges ahead, while highlighting the urgent need to accelerate progress on the Goals.

At the midpoint of SDG implementation, this report provides both a snapshot of SDG progress and a Rescue Plan for people and planet which will be critical for generating momentum for SDG implementation. In addition to the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (10 to 19 July), where countries will showcase  concrete actions they are taking to achieve the SDGs, the SDG Summit (18 to 19 September) will be a defining moment for world leaders to urgently reverse course and turbo-charge the SDGs.

The Press briefing on The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition will be hosted by: Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs; Francesca Perucci, Assistant Director, Statistics Division, UN DESA; and, Astra Bonini, Senior Sustainable Development Officer, Division for Sustainable Development Goals, UN DESA. Scheduled for Monday, 10 July 2023, 12:30 pm EDT (following the noon briefing) at UN Press Briefing Room, S-237 (Live on http://webtv.un.org).

The UN DESA will host a high-level event during the HLPF to further highlight the report and offer an opportunity for stakeholders to share their reactions to its findings and explore ways to amplify the recommendations for accelerating progress towards the SDGs in the lead-up to the SDG Summit.

The event will feature high-level government representatives, UN officials and representatives of civil society and the media. Scheduled for Monday, 10 July 2023, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm (EDT) at Conference Room 4, UN Headquarters in New York.
