Nigeria’s national power grid has recently lost 3,019MW of power due to key power sector constraints including gas, load demand frequency, line constraint and water management issues.
This is according to the daily power sector activity record obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. Gas constraints led to the loss of 1,626MW because there was a shortage of gas at eight Generation Companies (Gencos).
According to the The Daily Trust, the breakdown from last weekend shows that five Gencos under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) were affected as they lost 1,215MW: Alaoji NIPP lost 360MW, Omotosho lost 120MW, Geregu NIPP lost 145MW, Olorunsogo NIPP lost 360MW while Odukpani NIPP could not generate 230MW as at Friday.
The other plants lost MW: Omotosho Gas could not generate 152MW, Olorunsogo Gas 114MW, and Geregu Gas lost 145MW.
Power distribution
With regards to the power distribution, load demand variances resulted in frequency issues, which caused the loss of 1,183MW that affected 10 Gencos.
The distribution constraints are reported to have affected Omotosho NIPP where 120MW was lost; Shiroro hydro lost 262MW because it could not be picked by the Discos. Azura Edo Genco, a new entrant could not also deliver 236MW.
The other seven Gencos lost a combined generation capacity of 685MW of electricity. They include Afam VI, Omotosho Gas, Olorunsogo Gas, Transcorp Ughelli, Geregu Gas, Egbin and Omoku GenCo.
Another 160MW of electricity was not delivered at Jebba hydro Genco. This was due to water management constraint at the River Niger dam, which affected two of its turbines.
Transmission constraint also hindered the delivery of 140MW of electricity at Shiroro, as output from one of its turbines was restrained.
